Ameren is investor owned, so Mo. Rev. Stat. § 386.890, Net Metering and Easy Connection Act applies and these terms are set by the state rather than by a board that can revise them. That is the strongest position a homeowner can be in on net metering.

- Avoided fuel cost means the incremental costs to the utility of electric energy it would generate itself or purchase from another source. It is the floor the statute sets, not a ceiling on what a utility may offer.
- Credits expire after twelve months
- A surplus banked over the summer must be used within the year. There is no payout at the end, so the credit simply lapses.
- The two large utilities implement it differently
- Evergy allows one-for-one netting during the billing cycle. Ameren Missouri ties availability to eligible rate structures. Ask which arrangement applies to you before accepting a savings model.
- Evergy’s annual settlement is at avoided cost
- Reported in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 cents per kWh. Confirm the current figure in writing.
- 100 kW is the eligibility ceiling
- Far above what a house needs, so the statute is not what limits your system. The twelve month credit clock is.
