Entergy New Orleans net metering in Louisiana

Orleans Parish. Regulated by the New Orleans City Council rather than the state Commission, and the difference matters: New Orleans kept kilowatt hour for kilowatt hour net metering when the rest of Louisiana moved to avoided cost.

Installers serving Entergy NO customers

Pick one. Only the company you choose receives your details, and only that company calls you.

Not sure which to choose?

These are real companies operating in Entergy NO territory. Bold Energy is listed first because it is the company we introduce first. That order is our choice, not a score. The other companies are ordered by reviews, years trading and BBB grade. None of them pays us for placement. Pick the one you want and we will call you to arrange it.

Ordering combines three things we read from primary sources: Google review count and rating, years trading taken from the company’s Better Business Bureau profile rather than its own marketing, and its BBB letter grade. BBB accreditation is shown but never scored, because it is a paid membership rather than a mark of quality.

Check any contractor license yourself at the state register. Do that before you sign anything, with any company, including ours.

What this looks like on a Entergy NO bill

An average Louisiana household, against a system sized to cover its year. The energy charge is the part that goes to zero. The fixed monthly charge underneath it is the part that never does, and it is the number that decides whether a system pays for itself.

Meter reading falling from 41926 to 41591 kilowatt hours. A 1,202 kilowatt hour month against 1,537 kilowatt hours produced leaves 0 kilowatt hours billed and 335 banked for next month, so the energy charge falls from $162.15 to $0.00 at 13.49 cents per kilowatt hour.

Louisiana average household use, 1,202 kWh a month, at the current published residential price of 13.49¢ per kWh. Your utility still bills a fixed monthly customer charge that no system offsets, so this is the energy part of the bill, which is the part that goes away.

What your installer should be telling you

Residential systems are limited to 25 kW. Size to what the house uses, because a balance you never use is only ever paid out at avoided cost.

What Entergy NO bills you anyway

In a month when your production covers everything you use, the energy charge can reach zero. This does not. It is the floor under every bill, and it is the number that decides whether a system pays for itself.

The charge
$8.07 a month, plus percentage riders
How it is set
Schedule RES-25 sets a Customer Charge of $8.07, unchanged since 2019, and defines the minimum bill as “The Customer Charge above plus all applicable adjustments.” Several adjustments are percentages: the energy efficiency recovery rider adds 10.03% of residential base rate revenue, the second securitized storm cost rider 5.36% and the MISO rider 1.15%. The Formula Rate Plan adds 31.39% to residential rates but states that for the residential class it “shall not be applied to the customer charge”. Energy is 7.956 cents a kilowatt hour, or 6.317 cents above 800 in winter, before fuel and the other riders. With solar, Schedule NM-4 changes only the kilowatt hours on the bill, so the customer charge and its adjustments are paid every month. Surplus kilowatt hours carry forward against later usage and are paid out, at avoided cost, only when you stop service.

Applying to Entergy NO

What Entergy NO itself requires, as distinct from what the state rule requires. Read from its own published guidelines on the date shown.

New Orleans kept one for one net metering
The City Council regulates Entergy New Orleans, not the state Commission, and its Schedule NM-4 still nets kilowatt hours: a month’s surplus is credited against your usage in later months, kilowatt hour for kilowatt hour, at the full rate on your bill.
Banked credit does not expire while you stay
A surplus balance carries forward until it is used. Only when you stop service does Entergy pay what remains, in cash, at its avoided cost, the on-peak seasonal rate for solar.
Up to 25 kW for a house
Residential systems are limited to 25 kW, and Entergy charges a $50 installation fee for the metering work.
The state rules do not apply here
The Louisiana Commission’s 2019 move to instantaneous avoided cost covers the rest of the state, not Orleans Parish. A quote built on the statewide rules is using the wrong regulator.

Entergy NO net metering questions

Does Entergy NO offer one for one net metering?
Yes. Under Schedule NM-4, a month’s surplus generation is banked in kilowatt hours and credited against your usage in later months at the full rate. Any balance left when you stop service is paid at avoided cost. Banked in kilowatt hours until used.
What does Entergy NO pay for power sent back to the grid?
Still kilowatt hour for kilowatt hour. None while you take service; the balance is paid at avoided cost when you leave.
Do I need a battery with Entergy NO?
Not for the economics. Entergy NO credits exports at the retail rate, so power you send out during the day comes back at the same value after dark without storage. A battery is still worth considering for outages during hurricane season, but it is an upgrade here rather than a requirement.
