Battery backup is mandatory
in Duke Kentucky territory.
Duke Kentucky has not published a one for one credit that we have been able to verify. Until it does, we assume exporting power to Duke Kentucky is worth well below what you pay to buy it back.
That does not make solar a bad idea in Duke Kentucky territory. It changes what you should build. When exports are worth a fraction of retail the credit stops being the return, and the job becomes using more of your own production inside the house, which usually means a larger array than a one for one utility would need.
Sizing is where that gets decided, so ask about it directly. Kentucky’s statute puts the standard bidirectional meter on the supplier, but says any additional meters or distribution upgrades needed "shall be installed at the customer-generator’s expense", so ask what your circuit will require before you size anything. Duke Kentucky sets its own limits. Ask Duke Kentucky what it allows before you accept that a bigger system is off the table.
A battery then does two separate jobs. It moves daytime production into the evening so you use it instead of selling it, and it keeps the house running when the grid goes down. That second job is not a bonus. Panels on their own shut off in an outage, by design, so a roof full of them powers nothing during a storm. That is the part we will not refer around.
So we treat it as a requirement, not an upgrade. We will not refer you for a panels-only system in Duke Kentucky territory, and you should be skeptical of anyone who quotes you one without raising storage first.

The credit is the whole return
Panels only pay for themselves if the power you overproduce at midday comes back to you after dark. That exchange is net metering, and it is what turns a roof into an asset instead of an expense.
A decade of nothing, then a third
Residential electricity barely moved between 2010 and 2020, then added about a third by 2023 across much of the country, and it has not come back down. A fixed payment against a rate that can move like that is the actual bet.
The federal credit is gone, which changes the math
The 30% federal solar credit ended for systems completed after 31 December 2025. For ten years the federal credit did most of the persuading, and what your utility paid you was a footnote. That is now reversed. With the credit gone, the rate your utility credits your exported power is very close to the whole financial case, which is exactly why we start there rather than with panels.
Backup is the part people actually feel
Panels alone shut off in an outage. Paired with a battery the house keeps running through storm season, which is usually the benefit that gets talked about over the fence.
If you are quoted a 30% federal credit, stop
If anyone quotes you a 30% federal credit on a system being installed today, they are either working from an out of date script or hoping you will not check. Ask them to put it in writing, then ask your tax preparer.
