Evergy KS does not credit the power you send back at the rate it charges you to take it.

That does not make solar a bad idea in Evergy KS territory. It changes what you should build. When exports are worth a fraction of retail the credit stops being the return, and the job becomes using more of your own production inside the house, which usually means a larger array than a one for one utility would need.

Sizing is where that gets decided, so ask about it directly. Kansas sizes a system from your bills: annual kilowatt hours divided by 8,760 and by a capacity factor of 0.144, rounded up, sets the export capacity, and for systems operating from 1 January 2026 the panels may exceed that by no more than half. A house using 10,800 kWh a year gets 10 kW of export capacity and up to 15 kW of generating capacity (AC). Evergy KS sets its own limits. Ask Evergy KS what it allows before you accept that a bigger system is off the table.

A battery then does two separate jobs. It moves daytime production into the evening so you use it instead of selling it, and it keeps the house running when the grid goes down. That second job is not a bonus. Panels on their own shut off in an outage, by design, so a roof full of them powers nothing during a storm. That is the part we will not refer around.

So we treat it as a requirement, not an upgrade. We will not refer you for a panels-only system in Evergy KS territory, and you should be skeptical of anyone who quotes you one without raising storage first.

What Evergy KS bills you anyway

In a month when your production covers everything you use, the energy charge can reach zero. This does not. It is the floor under every bill, and it is the number that decides whether a system pays for itself.

How it is set
Evergy Kansas is two rate areas with two tariffs, and the bill names which one you are in. Evergy Kansas Central, which absorbed the old Westar territory including Wichita and Topeka, sets a Customer Charge of $15.25 under Schedule RS, effective 1 October 2025. Evergy Kansas Metro, on the Kansas City side, sets $14.25 under Schedule R, effective 21 December 2023. The two define the floor differently, and Central’s is the broadest minimum read on this site: “The Customer Charge, plus the minimum specified in the Electric Service Agreement, plus all applicable adjustments and surcharges.” So a Central bill cannot fall below the customer charge plus every adjustment rider in force, which means the true floor is above $15.25 and Evergy does not publish it as one figure. Metro’s is narrower — the Customer Charge plus “any additional charges for line extensions, if applicable”. In Central, a customer-generator is moved to Schedule RS-DG rather than staying on RS. It keeps the same $15.25 customer charge and the same minimum, and carries no demand charge, so the move changes the energy prices underneath rather than the fixed part of the bill. Metro’s energy runs 10.021 cents a kilowatt hour through the summer and 6.966 cents for the first 1,000 then 6.123 cents above that in winter.

What an exported kilowatt hour is worth
For systems connected since 1 July 2014, a billing period’s net excess is credited at 100% of the utility’s monthly system average cost of energy, the minimum the statute allows. It is recalculated every month and Evergy’s riders print no cents figure, so ask for the value on a recent bill rather than trusting a number in a quote.
System average cost is a wholesale figure
It is what the utility pays for energy across its whole system, not what it charges you, so it sits well below the retail price of the kilowatt hours you buy back.
The 50% rule started on 1 January 2026
For systems operating under an interconnect agreement from 1 January 2026, the generating capacity may not exceed the export capacity by more than 50% (K.S.A. 66-1267). Export capacity is set from your last twelve months of use: kilowatt hours divided by 8,760, then by 0.144, rounded up to the next 2 kW.
Older systems keep one for one until 2030
Systems operating before 1 July 2014 are still credited kilowatt hour for kilowatt hour, carried month to month with any balance expiring each 31 March, until 1 January 2030, and that status transfers with the property. After that every system moves to the system average cost.
The program is capped
Net metering is first come, first served until net metered capacity reaches 4% of the utility’s previous-year peak demand from 1 July 2026, rising to 5% from 1 July 2027.
The old figures you may have read are out of date twice over
Kansas raised the residential system size ceiling from 25 kW to 150 kW for systems operating after 1 July 2014, and then added the 2026 export capacity rule on top. Ask for the current rules, not a summary.
