Going solar does not move you to another rate: the Excess Distributed Generation rider bills you under your “standard rate schedule, inclusive of all applicable terms and rates”. What it does change is how exports are valued, and the method is unusual. Duke measures “the instantaneously determined total Excess Distributed Generation”, so only power leaving the house at that instant counts, and values it at a Marginal DG price of 4.1542 cents a kilowatt hour — the average wholesale price it paid in calendar 2023 multiplied by 1.25, as Indiana Code 8-1-40-17 requires. Instantaneous netting rewards using your own power as you make it far more than sending it back. One obligation that catches people: the rider requires you to carry homeowners or other insurance covering “at least one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000)” of liability arising from the generation equipment. Check your policy before you sign an interconnection agreement.
